sleep here

How bizarre and cool is this? Hand embroidered, appliqued, and painted re-appropriated linen. Handmade one of a kind by Brooklyn artist Joetta Maue. At first, I thought this was for your actual bed, which might be startling and unsettling every time you rolled over. But it is instead meant to hang on your wall. Approximate size: 30" x 30"

free wafels for all wafel artists

Good news, we didn't miss National Waffle Day, because it's today! And National Waffle Day means free Belgian wafels from our friendly neighborhood Wafels and Dinges truck (dinges means toppings, but don't ask me how to pronounce dinges).

To get your free wafel, there's a slight catch. But not too much of a catch. All you have to do is draw a picture of their wafel truck or a wafel (the Belgian kind they serve, not the Eggo kind) and show up at the truck on 52nd Street (Lex/3rd Avenues) between now and 4:30pm. Got it? I know, I am confused too. But here, let's check their Twitter @waffletruck to confirm. See you there!

apparently, these are clothespins too

Apparently, these are clothespins too. Clothespin cookies! Have you ever heard of them? Apparently, you wrap the dough around clothespins, hence the name. Here's a recipe, via allrecipes.com

Ingredients

  • 1 pound butter, softened
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 tablespoons white sugar
  • 2 egg yolks
  • 1 1/4 cups ice water
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 cups shortening
  • 8 cups confectioners' sugar
  • 1 (7 ounce) jar marshmallow creme
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Directions

  1. Mix 1/4 pound of the butter with 3 cups of flour, 2 tablespoons white sugar, egg yolks, and water. (Done like making pie dough with a pastry blender.)
  2. Chill for 1 hour then roll out like pie dough on a floured pastry sheet. Spread another 1/4 pound of the butter over dough. Fold dough together and refrigerate 1 hour. Repeat this procedure until all of the butter is used.
  3. Cut dough into fourths. Wrap each quarter in plastic wrap. Chill.
  4. Take out one quarter at a time and allow to stand at room temperature long enough that it softens enough that the dough can be rolled.
  5. Roll dough out on floured pastry sheet/ board. Cut dough into 1/2 inch wide X 4-5 inch long strips. Wrap around clothespins or dowel pins pinching ends.
  6. Bake at 400 degrees F (200 degrees C) for 12-15 minutes until lightly browned. Slide off sticks while still very warm and then cool completely.
  7. To Make Filling: In a saucepan over medium heat, cook 1 cup milk and 1/2 cup flour until thick stirring constantly. Let cool.
  8. Cream together shortening, confectioners' sugar, marshmallow cream, and vanilla. Add cooked mixture to creamed mixture and beat till fluffy. Fill cooled pastry curls with filling.

tools of the trade

We love how this amazing dress is made entirely out of the most humble clothing-related materials. Clothespins. It is so bold and incredible, and seems to refer to so many different cultures and clothing traditions. It's a little tribal. A little Ancient Chinese. A little bit Japanese Samurai. A little bit proper British -- perhaps Elizabethan or Victorian. This piece was made especially for the Harvey Nichols window in London last week. We hope you find it inspiring. Wish we were there.
