let there be lawn, part 2

We New Yorkers get excited about the signs of Spring. And in New York, this carpet-like lawn passes for Nature. Very very controlled and meticulously manicured micro-managed Nature. We'll take it. Roll out the lawn!

unwind at bryant park through february

This is new. Some of the food concessions from the Holiday Shops at Bryant Park will stay open through February. For your sipping and relaxing pleasure, post-skate or post-work, check out Aroma cafe at the 6th Avenue entrance. Bryant Park already has free Wi-Fi. Now you have a spot to check your Facebook page that is a bit warmer, and with easy access to chocolate and coffee. What could be better? Plus, they have really nice chairs. Yay! I like this kind of change.

bryant park ice skating

The word is out. And everyone knows it. Bryant Park ice skating has been sooooooooo crowded this season. But not in the rain. Well, some people don't mind skating in the rain. I'm not sure if I'm one of them...

'tis the season for skating!

Free Skate is in full swing at Bryant Park, which is, by the way, just three blocks away from Dollhouse HQ. Yup, we're pretty lucky that way. We can keep our skates under our desk and go skating at lunch. Oh, and did we mention, there is a certain giant chocolate chip cookie that we've been coveting at one of the Holiday Shops at Bryant Park? The cookie costs five dollars. I mean that's quite a New York mark-up. But what the hay. 'Tis also the season to spend all your money. And eat too many sweets.

destination: dollhouse showroom

We're back at Dollhouse after a long weekend! Did you have nice holidays? Welcome back everyone! Here are some New York-y type commuting scenes on the way to the showroom this morning.

Bryant Park! Always a peaceful cut-through from the 7 train to the Garment District.

Bryant Park Fountain.

Sixth Avenue. The most scaffolding I have ever seen.

Everyone's commuting. Even the lunch cart guy.

Impressive, right?

That's us!

Dollhouse Showroom, ready for Market Week!

skating anyone?

The looks of The Pond as of a few minutes ago today.

I shot this one yesterday. When we didn't get a snow day.

Oh the weather outside is frightful, but the The Pond is so delightful. Well, you know the rest of the song... The Pond at Bryant Park may be mounded up with snow on the outer edges of the rink, but the ice is freshly zambonied. So get out there and skate! It's fun. And free if you have your own skates. And you can't beat the views. Spectacular. All the info you need to skate is right here.

the rink is back!

I almost forgot to remind you. Ice skating season has started again at Bryant Park!!! Check out our 2008 post for more information. We'll be back with fresh pictures and fresh updates about this happy event. Pretty much the only thing different about this year is that the Rink will be up longer, way past January 25. Why? Because Fashion Week is no longer at Bryant Park!

ping pong trophy anyone?

Ping Pong at Bryant Park. Sure it looks peaceful now, but you should see
how these people serve! The spins! I mean, I am out of my league.

I realize there may not be anyone out there (besides me) who would be interested in this little newsy tid-bit. But you never know. So I'm posting it. There's going to be a Ping Pong Tournament in Bryant Park (right near our Dollhouse HQ, as it so happens) on Wednesday, June 2. Starts at 6. It's free to enter, but only 32 spots are open. So decide soonish, and call to register: 212.768.4242. I am still deciding. Do I really want to play against a bunch of super super good men? Why don't any girls ever enter these things? I mean, I don't know. I'm still deciding.

fashion's night out

MAGIC's over. Now it's time to focus on Market Week next week, and of course New York Fashion Week and Fashion's Night Out. The Tents are being built in Bryant Park as we speak. Fall is always exciting in NYC, isn't it?

bryant park summer movies!

The movie screen is up at Bryant Park!

Bryant Park, June 2009. Yes a bit gloomy.

It's that time again! Although the weather is more Winter-like than Summer-like these days (what is up with June this year??), it's time for the Bryant Park Summer movies on the lawn! The screen is installed. All you need is a blanket, a picnic, and a good book to read until the movie starts. By the way, although they quote 5pm as the start time, that's just for blankets and picnicking. The movies start at dusk (8-9pm). And the place gets crowded, so arrive early to score a great seat.

How many movies have you seen on this list? I have seen 5/10.

spring into spring (tomorrow)

photo of the actual lawn at Bryant Park, taken this morning

You should have seen how hard the crews worked to install this
lawn. The moment Fashion Week was over, they were rolling out the dirt,
leveling it off, and laying the sod. I think they worked for 8 solid days,
just on the lawn! Amazing.

"spontaneous nature" in Bryant Park. Anything blooming
or about to bloom is very exciting to a city dweller.

This looks like a perfect spot for lunch. You should have seen the
park yesterday! Everyone was so happy, sitting in the sun,
munching on sandwiches. Things of that nature.

One more day 'til Spring! And look, they "installed" the lawn in Bryant Park. Just in time!

I should have titled this post, "Let there be Lawn."

evening skate

Ice skating in the evening glow of the city surrounded by skyscrapers.
The Empire State Building, all lit up for the holiday season, in the background.
What could be better?

The Pond at Bryant Park is open! And great fun, I might add. I am going to try to figure out how to bring you pictures, and a video denim trend report from the ice. I am thinking of wrapping my camera in bubble wrap, just in case I fall...

If you want to get your skate on, here are all the particulars:

Skate rental: $12
Admission: Free
Locker: Free
Lock: bring your own (free) or buy one there for a whopping $9. It is better to bring your own.
Bag check: $7-$10, so leave your bag at home

Hours: 8am to midnight, Friday-Saturday; 8am to 10pm, Sunday-Thursday.
Ice skating season at The Pond runs through January 25.

The Pond at Bryant Park. The two-story red and blue structure in the background
is the Celsius Lounge which offers food, drink, and a great view of the action.

The skating hut on the right contains lockers, snack bar, skate rental,
coat check and seats. Very comfortable and nice.

pumpkin muffins at pain quotidien

Last year around this time, I had a hankering for a pumpkin muffin... After a city-wide search, stopping in every deli and bakery within a 40-block radius (I kid you not), I came up with nothing. Until yesterday!

Found: pumpkin muffins (organic!) at Pain Quotidien near Bryant Park. Price: $2.60

I told you there would be pumpkin-related posts today. Happy Halloween!
